Why “Prana” and what does it mean?

Prana is a Sanskrit word meaning the subtle vital energy that flows through our body. Also known as “qi” or “chi”, this energy is fundamental to all living things, including environments. This word best describes the work I do because my aim is to help clients maximize, harmonize, and maintain their vital energy to experience less stress and more inner peace.

Chantelle Diachina, RCC, CCC
B.Ed., M.Ed., M.A. Counselling Psych.
E-RYT 200, RYT 500, YACEP

Chantelle advocates for the human spirit. For more than a decade she was an elementary school teacher in underserved neighbourhoods of Detroit, MI, Brampton, ON, and London, ON. In her own life she has faced traumas, racialization, and significant personal losses. Her life turned around in 2001 when she met her first yoga teacher from India, who practiced classical hatha yoga. Impressed and intrigued with the positive impact the classes had on her life off of the mat, Chantelle dove deeper into the philosophy and psychology of yoga and other schools of Eastern wisdom traditions. Five years later, she left her teaching career and began studying with various Master Yogis from the Sivananda lineage in Canada, U.S.A. and India. She has now been teaching and practicing classical hatha yoga and practical Eastern philosophy for close to 20 years.

In 2013, Chantelle launched her own wellness company, Prana Yoga & Wellness. She facilitated mindfulness-based stress resiliency workshops, yoga and meditation classes, as well as retreats to corporate and private clients in London, Ontario. In 2016, she was invited to be a teacher on the Insight Timer meditation app, where she attracted an international community of over 16,000 meditators. In 2020, the pandemic deeply impacted Prana’s corporate client portfolio, however, after receiving several referrals from a psychologist for clients diagnosed with PTSD, Chantelle began teaching online privately. She enjoyed this work immensely and was inspired to pursue a graduate degree in counselling psychology, which she completed through Yorkville University in 2023.

Having moved to Victoria from London in 2021 with her spouse, two daughters and family dog, Prana Yoga & Wellness has now evolved into Prana Self-Care Services. Being relatively new to the area, Chantelle is excited to contribute to the well-being of her new community.
